The Five Questions Everyone Asks About Their Auto Insurance

1)      How do I get cheap auto insurance? This is almost always the first thing people think about when they're shopping around for an insurance policy. The answer is simple: Take advantage of the discounts you have available to you (talk to your insurance agent, you might be surprised at what will save you money!). Keep your credit score in good shape. Check out the information published by the Highway Loss Data Institute before buying a new car. And don't forget to shop around. Not all insurance companies are created equal. One company might be able to save you hundreds a year where another couldn't save you a penny.

2)      Do I have to have insurance if I only have a learners permit? The rules on this one are the same in every city in every state in every corner of the U.S. If you're going to be getting behind the wheel of a car you have to have auto insurance. It doesn't matter how old you are, whether you're driving with a license or a learners permit or who's sitting in the passenger seat.

3)      Am I covered by my friend's/boyfriend's/parent's insurance if I drive their car? The rules on this one tend to change from company to company, so it's best not to assume. Most companies will, however, extend coverage to any licensed driver over the age of 25.

4)      Will my auto insurance come with me if I go out of the country? Whether or not your insurance will be valid out of the country depends entirely on what company you're insured with and where you happen to be going. If you're planning a trip and you know you're going to be driving, talk to your insurance agent. You might be better off renting a car and purchasing the additional insurance there.

5)      Can I insure a car without a driver's license? Absolutely. If a car is going to be wearing valid tags (license plates) it absolutely, positively must be covered by an auto insurance policy in most states. If you don't currently have a valid driver's license you can still insure your car so you can get it registered. You just can't drive it.
